What Relieves Minor Burn Pain?

Minor burn pain is a common but unpleasant experience. For adults as well as children, the pain is usually significant enough that the sufferer wants to quickly ease it in some way. Although minor burns can take at least several days to a few weeks to completely heal, there are some things that you can do in the meantime to relieve any initial pain or discomfort.

Here are a few options to try at home.

Cool Water

What Relieves Minor Burn PainIf you’re experiencing a typical burn from touching a hot pan or getting too close to an open flame, first run your wound under cool but not cold water to soothe it. Refrain from using ice as this can actually make your injury worse.

Use a Moisturizer

As a way to ease the burn, try using aloe or a similar gel. This can include over-the-counter topical solutions at your local drug store.

Pain Reliever

If you find that your pain is longer lasting than expected, try using a pain reliever. Options like Tylenol or Ibuprofen when used as directed can help to better manage your pain.

Leave Blisters Alone

If you’ve been burned badly enough, you’ll likely have at least one blister. Avoid the urge to puncture the blister as this will add to your pain. The skin or tissue under the burn is even more sensitive than the injured outer skin of your blister.

Prepare for Swelling.

Burns tend to swell. By taking off items such as rings, bracelets and other tight-fitting items, you can minimize your pain and discomfort while possibly preventing further injury.

Extra Care

Sometimes burns require professional medical attention. If you have concerns that your burn needs to be looked at by a health professional, you can do several things. You can schedule an appointment with your family doctor or go to the emergency room at your local hospital. A third, often more affordable and convenient option, is to visit a local walk-in clinic. This allows you to receive prompt attention for burns or any other medical conditions that concern you.
